Student Residence

The Tossizza Student Residence – known by its Greek initials ΦΕΤ (FET) – was established by the Baron Michael Tossizza Foundation in tStudent Residence 1950s on an approximately 8-acre estate in Lykovrisi, Attica.

The first resident students began to graduate in 1957. They were young men from Epirus who had been admitted, in keeping with the Foundation’s original purpose, to higher education institutions in Athens and were housed in the Residence’s spacious, newly built premises. In its early years, the Residence accommodated only male students, as very few women pursued higher education at the time. All residents came from families of limited financial means, who would otherwise havStudent Residence struggled to support their children’s studies in the Greek capital.

At the time, the area was still largely rural. Evangelos Averoff established a small farm on the property, with several cows, around a dozen sheep, pigs, and poultry. The students helped care for the animals in their free time, while the large garden was tended mainly by sStudent Residence from the Agricultural University.

The Student Residence was a pioneering institution and continues to have a deep social impact. Over the decades, several hundred young people from Epirus have passed through its halls, leaving their villages full of ambition and going on to honour their homeland – some as academics at the University of Ioannina, others distinguishing themselves across many other professional fields.

Admission is based on a range of criteria covering academic merit, personal circumstances and financial need. Specific factors considered include the family’s financial situation, the number of family members, the applicant’s secondary school graduation grade, the faculty or department to which the applicant has been admitted, a personal interview, and any bereavement or disability affecting a first-degree relative.
